What is a Typical Home?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently came out with the 2009 American Housing Survey, that contains many facts and statistics about U.S. homes.

Following you will find some of the highlights:

• Most families that have young children live within one mile of a public elementary school.

• Natural gas is the most common home heating fuel in the U.S.

• Only a third of U.S. homes have a working carbon monoxide detector.

• There are approximately 130 million residential housing units in the U.S.

• Eighty-six percent of U.S. housing units are occupied.

• The median age of homes in the U.S. is 36 years.

• Sixty-eight percent of U.S. homes are occupied by homeowners.

• Fifty-one percent of U.S. homes are in suburbs. Twenty-nine percent are in central cities, and 20 percent are outside metro areas.

• The median size of a U.S. home is 1,500 square feet. That’s slightly smaller than the median size in 1973, which was 1,610 square feet.

• Recently built homes are much larger with a median size of 2,300 square feet.

• Owner-occupied homes generally are on larger lots than renter-occupied homes.

• Fifty-three percent of U.S. homes have six or more rooms. That’s up from only 29 percent in 1973.

• Sixty-five percent of recently built homes have six or more rooms.

• Sixty-four percent of homes have three or more bedrooms, but 80 percent of recently built homes have that many.

• Fifty-one percent of homes have two or more bathrooms, but 89 percent of recently built homes have that many.

• In 1973, only 19 of homes had two or more bathrooms
