Bike Sharing May be Coming to Hoboken

May 19, 2011

The cities of Hoboken and Jersey City are teaming up with Hudson County Transportation Management Association to create a plan to bring a bike-sharing program to the west coast of the Hudson. Officials in the city of Hoboken are hoping that the progressive ideals of Hoboken and nearby cities for implementing innovative results will serve as a model for other urban areas.

The idea includes a program that seeks compatible user groups; – most notably, residential commuters attracted to the transportation hubs during peak times in the regular commuter routes. Tourists who visit the New Jersey waterfront to see the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty would use the program during off-peak times. The promoters of the bike-sharing program are hoping for a system that could work across several municipalities and combine with existing transportation modes.

The idea for a bike-sharing program in the Hoboken area follows a similar one begun in Newark. The Newark program, operated by the non-profit organization Meadowlink, pairs commuters with local university students who share similar commuting patterns. The key to success is to use bike sharing where travel patterns can support continued use of the equipment and keep redistribution to a minimum.

Why is bike sharing important in urban areas? There is a strong connection between flourishing transportation centers and surrounding neighborhoods that can be served with a “one size fits all” solution like bike sharing. Bikes take up less space on streets and travel at speeds more suitable to an urban area. Bikes are also more eco-friendly than many other forms of transportation. They are quieter and do not contribute to air pollution.

The bike sharing project is good news for Hoboken and surrounding areas. It helps commuters and tourists with transportation in an eco-friendly way. Also a great way to get some exercise!

Hope to see you biking around town!

Calling all Hoboken Bikers! Spring is here and it is time to get your bike ready for the upcoming warm weather. Bike Hoboken will be holding its first formal meeting on Wednesday, February 23, at 8 p.m. at Carpe Diem located at 14th and Grand Streets.

At the top of the agenda of the meeting will be the group’s list of goals and recent accomplishments for 2011. Topics will include, the subject of more bike racks and riding lanes as well as more group rides.

The group is also hoping to recruit new members to give a hand with carrying out the group’s goals.

According to Josh Meyers, a group member, states, “Although Hoboken is a small town, the task of turning it into one of the most bike-friendly towns in America is no small endeavor.”

Another Reason to Buy a Home in Hoboken

February 11, 2011

There is great news on the education front in Hoboken and another one of the many great reasons to purchase a home in Hoboken. The New Jersey School Report Card has announced that the per pupil spending rose in many Hudson County school districts last year. Hoboken led the pack with the county’s highest amount spent per pupil at $18,726 per student. The students in Jersey City were not as fortunate with the per pupil spending decreasing by more than $1,000 from the 2008-2009 school year.

The report also states the salaries of administrators and teachers. The highest-paid faculty members were in Hoboken, where the median was  $80,337. As a whole the report displays statistics that includes class sizes, the median salaries of teachers, and student performance on standardized tests.

Ways to Stop Foreclosure

February 5, 2011

The possible foreclosure of your Hoboken home is a tragedy and everyone has a unique situation that got them to this point. Following are several ideas to help keep you in your home:

1) Utilize the resources at the Making Home Affordable web site. You will find all the information you will need to request a loan modification.

2) Contact your mortgage company and let them know you are interested in a loan modification. If you are aware of your foreclosure date be upfront and let them know you have an urgent situation and need assistance.

3) Your loan company will ask you a variety of questions and they will then decide if you are eligible for the modification. If it is decided that you qualify for a loan modification you will than receive a packet of forms that you must fill out and return. Make sure that everything is filled out correctly, signed and dated or you could see big delays. Be sure to make copies for yourself in case any paperwork gets lost.

4) It’s a good idea to followup by calling on a weekly basis to check on your status. Generally, they will say it will be 4-6 weeks before they can make a decision but still followup weekly during this time period. Be sure to take notes regarding who you spoke to during your followup call and what you were told.
